Warren noted that he rarely used the Widgets panel or Microsoft Teams, citing that he preferred the weather display that later versions of Windows 10 offered, and didn't use Teams to communicate with his friends and family. He also acknowledged the expansion of Microsoft Store to include more "traditional" desktop applications. Overall, he concluded that "I wouldn't rush out to upgrade to Windows 11, but I also wouldn't avoid it. After all, Windows 11 still feels familiar and underneath all the UI changes, it's the same Windows we've had for decades."
Cunningham concluded that "as I've dug into and learned its ins and outs for this review, I've warmed to it more", but argued that the OS was facing similar "public perception" issues to Windows Vista and Windows 8. A redesigned user interface is present frequently throughout the operating system, building upon Fluent Design System; translucency, shadows, a new color palette, and rounded geometry are prevalent throughout the UI. A prevalent aspect of the design is an appearance known as "Mica", described as an "opaque, dynamic material that incorporates theme and desktop wallpaper to paint the background of long-lived windows such as apps and settings". The "Widgets" button on the taskbar displays a panel with Microsoft Start, a news aggregator with personalized stories and content (expanding upon the "news and interests" panel introduced in later builds of Windows 10). Microsoft Teams is similarly integrated with the taskbar, with a pop-up showing a list of recent conversations.
Aside from these changes, Microsoft addresses a number of bugs, including no app icons issue in search box, pin / unpin apps in start from file explorer, blurry windows issue for ALT + Tab, show desktop from taskbar, and many more. Here's the complete changelog you can check before updating your laptop or PC. In terms of specific hardware-focussed changes, the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build brings a new docking experience for users working on multiple monitors. There are also features including dynamic refresh rate and display improvements such as Auto HDR support.
For machines that have an accelerometer, the Windows 11 lock screen also has a parallax motion effect. This build lets you quickly share content from open app windows directly from your taskbar to your Teams meeting calls. In addition, a wide variety of bugs have been fixed, including one in which Clipboard history wasn't working properly, and another in which explorer.exe crashed when using the touch keyboard. That should be immediately clear from Microsoft's note on known issues.
Microsoft says the taskbar won't show on multiple monitors, settings won't launch if you have multiple user accounts, the install button might not work in the Microsoft store, and more. It is advised to download the first Windows 11 preview only on secondary devices as it includes some known issues. These include limited taskbar that will not be shown across multiple monitors, unavailability of the 'Power mode' setting on the Power & battery page, and misaligned widgets on external monitors.
There are also many bugs that could impact your day-to-day experience. Windows 11 is set to reach general availability stage sometime later this year. But ahead of that, Microsoft has released the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build for developers to test the new experience. The Windows 11 preview includes features such as the centrally-placed Start menu and taskbar as well as new themes and sounds — almost all that was showcased at the virtual Windows event last week. In addition to the debut of Windows 11 preview build, Microsoft seems to be hinting at an October release date for Windows 11.
These builds are from the earliest stage in a new development cycle with the latest work-in-progress code from our engineers. These aren't always stable builds, and sometimes you will see issues that block key activities or require workarounds while flighting in the Dev Channel. It is important to make sure you read the known issues listed in our blog posts as we document many of these issues with each flight. Because of being at the earliest stage of a new development cycle, you won't see new features or major changes in these builds right away. New features and OS improvements from these builds could show up in future Windows releases when they're ready, and we may deliver them as full OS updates or servicing releases. Internet Explorer has been replaced by the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as the default web browser, and Microsoft Teams is integrated into the Windows shell.
Microsoft also announced plans to allow more flexibility in software that can be distributed via Microsoft Store, and to support Android apps on Windows 11 . This build gives new capabilities to voice access, including spelling words and entering numbers, punctuation marks, and symbols and emojis. On clean install, the Color profile button should not be pinned by default, but it might appear on upgrades. Want to try out Windows 11 but not a part of the Windows Insider Program? You can still test this operating system for no cost before buying a full copy of the same.
As per Windows 11's official system requirements, it requires TPM 2.0. If your system does not has this chip on the motherboard then you probably cannot try out Windows 11. So this s a must, check inside your Bios settings to turn it on. Preview ISO builds are usually released on the DevChannels, and not all are going can access it. But thankfully there are many online platforms where you can get a working copy of Windows 11 for free. There were a set of PCs, already running preview builds in the Dev Channel up through June 24, 2021, that fell below the requirements stated above, and failed hardware requirements beyond TPM 2.0 and CPU family.
However, they will still receive Windows 11 Cumulative Updates leading up to general availability. Windows 11 insider preview is divided into two channels, one is beta and the other is Dev. Beta is the next version that is going to release, while the Dev channel includes features that can make it into the next stable update. It's counterintuitive to test the Beta channel, rather just download and hop to the latest Windows 10 insider preview ISO and get it installed on your computer. No as there is no actual tangible benefit to using windows insider builds and they come with the risk of having to use a buggy unstable operating system.
The program is certainly worth it for Microsoft as a large number of users with varied hardware will test their operating system without needing to pay for testers. In January 2021, it was reported that a job listing referring to a "sweeping visual rejuvenation of Windows" had been posted by Microsoft. A visual refresh for Windows, developed under the codename "Sun Valley", was reportedly set to re-design the system's user interface.
In October 2019, Microsoft announced "Windows 10X", a future edition of Windows 10 designed exclusively for dual-touchscreen devices such as the then-upcoming Surface Neo. Legacy Windows applications would also be required to run in "containers" to ensure performance and power optimization. Microsoft stated that it planned to release Windows 10X devices by the end of 2020. This build introduces a "Taskbar settings" page, which lets you hide and unhide icons on the taskbar. Windows 11 has been released, but behind the scenes, Microsoft is constantly working to improve the newest version of Windows. The company frequently rolls out public preview builds to members of its Windows Insider Program, allowing them to test out — and even help shape — upcoming features.
Voice access is a new experience that enables everyone, including people with mobility disabilities, to control their PC and author text using their voice. For example, voice access supports scenarios like opening and switching between apps, browsing the web, and reading and authoring mail. Voice access leverages modern, on-device speech recognition to accurately recognize speech and is supported without an internet connection.
Language only, so the Windows display language should be set to English-U.S., otherwise voice access may not work as expected. The Windows 11 preview has gets touch keyboard personalisations, voice typing launcher, improved gesture controls, pen menu for stylus inputs, and an updated input switcher. Do note that the Dev Channel is NOT testing the operating system version that is being released tomorrow. Dev Channel Insiders have moved on to test builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch, which means post-launch updates and features that may be released through future versions of Windows 11. Microsoft noted in the release notes that some features or bug fixes "may make their way into the servicing updates for the released version of Windows 11 after general availability on October 5th." Windows 11, the first major Windows release since 2015, builds upon its predecessor by revamping the user interface to follow Microsoft's new Fluent Design guidelines.
The redesign, which focuses on ease of use and flexibility, comes alongside new productivity and social features and updates to security and accessibility, addressing some of the deficiencies of Windows 10. This build includes a new feature that lets you right-click on either "Recommended" or the "More" button in Start to refresh the items shown there. In addition, it has a number of bug fixes, including one that caused Search to appear black and not display any content below the search box, and another that caused cellular data to not work on certain devices. Searching for apps and settings in the Windows search box on the taskbar is now even faster and more accurate than before. Try searching for your favorite app or a setting you use frequently to see faster results.
We've also fixed an issue that prevented Windows users from being able to search for an app in the first few seconds after it had been installed. Alongside the updated internals, Microsoft is also bringing the first set of updates to Windows 11 apps. The first app to receive a major overhaul is the Snipping Tool, which replaces the classic Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch app available previously. The new solution offers greater editing possibilities for the image you are taking while enabling much easier access to it with the WIN + SHIFT + S keyboard shortcut.
There are much more features to it, however, another one to note is the addition of dark mode. The Snipping Tool now honors your theme choice, even if you run it under the dark more. Speaking of apps, Windows 11 will include a new Windows Subsystem for Android, allowing Android apps to run on the familiar Windows desktop. However, that feature did not ship with the initial release of Windows 11 and only began appearing in Windows 11 preview builds several weeks after the official Windows 11 launch.
You can check out our Windows Insider Program documentation here, including a list of all the new features and updates released in builds so far. Are you not seeing any of the features listed for this build? Check your Windows Insider Settings to make sure you're in the Dev Channel, and see the list of builds available in the Flight Hub. Submit feedback here to let us know if things weren't working the way you expected. The quick access to apps, gaming, and entertainment is nice.
But ultimately, the real exciting feature is bonafide programs in the "app" store. Already you can find OBS, Canva, and Zoom in the Microsoft Store. The Adobe Creative Suite will arrive sometime in the future. That means all updates and payment processing will go through the programs and not the Microsoft Store. Microsoft has just released the Windows 11 build for Insiders in the Dev Channel, which only brings bug fixes and minor improvements. The company has made Android apps available in preview for Beta Channel Insiders today, but Dev Channel Insiders will have to wait before being able to test them.
What Is Windows 11 Insider Preview Update It is also worth adding that these builds are not tied to any particular version of Windows 11. That means that new features and improvements that are available in these builds will appear in the stable version only when they are ready. Moreover, these changes can be included either in major feature updates, or delivered to users via cumulative updates.
These PCs will continue to receive Insider Preview builds normally depending on which channel they have opted their PC into. Simply double-click the ISO fie to open it, and Windows will "mount" the file so you can access the files. Simply double-click the Setup.exe file to start the installation process. Here, you'll have a choice to "Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps," or you can keep "nothing" to create a clean installation. Once you've made that selection, the Windows 11 installation process will begin. For those who are still running Windows 10, but are adventurous enough to join the beta, you can register for Microsoft's beta program here.
Of course, while Microsoft says that the Beta Channel releases are more stable than Dev Channel ones, they are still betas. Microsoft has released the first beta of Windows 11, available to those enrolled in its Windows Insider Program. Voice access is a new experience starting with Windows 11 build that enables everyone, including people with mobility disabilities, to control their PC and author text using their voice. For example, voice access supports scenarios like opening and switching between apps, browsing the web... Windows 11 build brings in new features as well as some fixes improvements to the operating system.
If you have not installed the update yet, follow this guide to upgrade now. Although we should warn you, there are some known issues with this release as well. As part of the minimum system requirements, Windows 11 only runs on devices with a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 security coprocessor. According to Microsoft, the TPM 2.0 coprocessor is a "critical building block" for protection against firmware and hardware attacks.
In addition, Microsoft now requires devices with Windows 11 to include virtualization-based security , hypervisor-protected code integrity , and Secure Boot built-in and enabled by default. The operating system also features hardware-enforced stack protection for supported Intel and AMD processors for protection against zero-day exploits. Task View, a feature introduced in Windows 10, features a refreshed design, and supports giving separate wallpapers to each virtual desktop. When a display is disconnected in a multi-monitor configuration, the windows that were previously on that display will be minimized rather than automatically moved to the main display. If the same display is reconnected, the windows are restored to their prior location.
We fixed an issue pressing ESC or clicking the desktop wouldn't dismiss the window of open app preview thumbnails if you set focus to it after pressing WIN + T. You can choose to auto start voice access the next time you sign-in to your PC in settings. You can also use voice commands or keyboard shortcuts (Alt + Shift + C and Alt + Shift + B) to control whether voice access is listening or not listening. Quickly drag and drop files between app windows, by hovering over apps in the taskbar to bring their windows to the foreground. Try attaching a file to an Outlook e-mail by dragging it and hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar to bring the window to the foreground.
Once in the foreground, drop your file into the e-mail to attach it. You can also customize your taskbar with your favorite apps from Start's All apps list by dragging and dropping over the taskbar to pin them. You can also drag and drop to the desktop via "Show desktop" at the very right corner of the taskbar. To check for Windows 11 compatibility, download and run the PC Health Check app, which will identify specific compatibility issues that prevent an upgrade. Older hardware is less likely to pass Windows 11's stringent compatibility checks; for example, most Intel 7th Generation Core processors are not on the list of compatible CPUs, nor are PCs built using AMD Zen 1 processors.
PCs purchased in 2016 or earlier are almost certain to be unsupported. The new features in build include Spotlight collection of desktop background wallpapers, voice access, new entrances to widgets in the taskbar, and so on. With Spotlight collection, you can enjoy lots of background wallpapers every day. And the new feature voice access will allow you to interact with your computer by voice. You can also swipe from the left using the touch bar/ display or hitting Win + W on the keyboard to access the widgets. There are, by default, widgets for calendar, weather, local traffic, Microsoft To Do lists, OneDrive photos, sports and esports, stock watchlist, and tips. The widgets section also includes a news feed section to show personalised news content. In case if you found such restart your computer, Update the Driver or try to troubleshoot. However, if many users report the issue which you have been experiencing then you can expect the patch in an upcoming version of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. Microsoft rolling out their latest build of Windows 11 to both Dev and Beta Channel, you can find updates if you have sign-up to Windows Insider Program then you can check and download the latest build to upgrade to windows 11. Currently, the Dev channel is releasing assemblies from the active development branch , which may be unstable.
Sometimes you will run into problems that require specific actions or workarounds to solve. These builds are not specific to any particular version of Windows 11, which means that new features and improvements that will be in these builds will only appear in the stable version when they are ready. Microsoft regularly releases upcoming builds to the Insider Program, allowing members to test out new functionality and provide feedback. If that's something that interests you, this article may still be of interest, although we wouldn't recommend signing up to the experimental Dev Channel on your main device. If it's been more than 10 days since you joined the program and it is no longer possible to switch back to the stable build, you will need to reinstall the OS using Windows 11 ISO images or Media Creation Tool.
